The Versamap Micro World Database (VMWD) consists of 5 digital world maps, Vmap1.map (220,000 points) through Vmap5.map (9,000 points).  The registered version of the Versamap 3 mapping program includes all 5 digital maps.  The shareware version of Versamap 3 includes only Vmap4.map (21,000 points).

Enhancements to the Versamap Micro World Database include:

VMWD contains the following 10 geographic features:

Sample maps drawn using the Versamap Micro World Database:

The following maps were exported from Versamap 3 as Windows Bitmaps (BMP) and as Windows Metafiles (WMF).  To reduce file size, each BMP image was converted to portable network graphics (PNG) format with Microsoft Paint.  WMF images are vector graphics files and can be enlarged and reduced without loss of detail, whereas BMP and PNG images are bitmapped files and do not enlarge or reduce well.

The following world map (WMF, 981 KB) was drawn on an Equirectangular projection, using Vmap1.map (220,000 points), the most detailed digital map in the Versamap Micro World Database.  The map shows all geographic features present in the database.

Versamap cartography: Equirectangular projection showing all geofeatures in Vmap1.map.

The following map (WMF, 475 KB), was drawn on an Orthographic projection, using Vmap1.map (220,000 points), the most detailed digital map in the Versamap Micro World Database.  The map shows all geographic features present in the database.

Versamap cartography: Orthographic projection showing all geofeatures in Vmap1.map.

The following map (WMF, 45 KB) of Korea and Japan was drawn on a Hammer equal-area projection.  The map shows all geographic features present in the database.

Versamap cartography: Korea and Japan plotted from the Versamap Micro World Database

The following map (WMF, 20 KB) of Cape Hatteras was drawn on a Equirectangular projection.  The map shows all geographic features present in the database.

Versamap cartography: Cape Hatteras plotted from the Versamap Micro World Database

Statistics of Versamap Micro World Database files:

VMWD consists of the following 5 files, each of which is a complete world map.  The index N in the VmapN.map files represents the number of points included in the file.  As the index gets smaller, the number of points in the file increases and the distance between points on the map decreases.

Filename Size (bytes) Number of Points Average Distance Between Points (nautical miles)
Vmap1.map 1,318,134
219,689 3
Vmap2.map 789,174 131,529 6
Vmap3.map 240,618 40,103 16
Vmap4.map 128,994 21,499 27
Vmap5.map 53,574 8,929 50

The registered version of the Versamap 3 mapping program includes all 5 digital maps (Vmap1.map through Vmap5.map) in the Versamap Micro World Database.  The shareware version of Versamap 3 includes Vmap4.map.

Amount of detail in Versamap Micro World Database files:

The following maps of the East Coast of the United States, show the amount of detail in each of the VmapN.map digital maps.

Versamap cartography: Amount of detail in 220,000 point digital map Vmap1.map Versamap cartography: Amount of detail in 132,000 point digital map Vmap2.map

Versamap cartography: Amount of detail in 40,000 point digital map Vmap3.map Versamap cartography: Amount of detail in 21,000 point digital map Vmap4.map

Versamap cartography: Amount of detail in 9,000 point digital map Vmap5.map

Acknowledgments:

The Versamap Micro World Database is an enhanced version of Micro World Data Bank II, a digital map database containing 179,000 points, placed in the public domain by Fred Pospeschil and Antonio Riveria.
